A guided tour at NUREMBERG 2017's toy fair.
At the beginning of February 2017 the traditional toy and model fair took place in the enormous Expo Park in Nuremberg, Germany. This was the opportunity for MCM to meet some of our suppliers and to discover new brands and products that will be released this year.
What really stands out, even more then previous editions, is the absence of great brands, this year the missing HorizonHobby stand was what stoud out the most. HorizonHobby is changing everything for the European distribution en had cancelled their appointment weeks before the fair. A huge part of the lobby was empty because of this, however the organisation of the fair tried to camouflage this huge surface, with no true success. Another American giant, Hobbico, is also revisiting their European distribution and were absent as well. After 3 years of being distributed by the Revell company, the brand is now ditributed by Promodels, who has become the new Hobbico supplier for Europe. Their Belgian stand was occupied with Hobbico products, presenting new drones, cars, boats and transmitters, but practically no new planes, even if on the other side of the Atlantic new planes are being released. HPI had a much smaller stand this year compared to previous editions, presenting the same "new" products as last year, because those are still not released. Brands like Rally-Legends, Tech-One, Killerbody and some others were not present this year. Fortunately brands like Multiplex, Hitec, Ninco, T2M, Tamiya, Yuneec, DJI and many others were present on this edition. We would like you to follow us on our journey, visiting the fair with this article.
AMEWI
AMEWI, newcomers at Nuremberg, presented us their huge variaty of products, including a lot of RC toys, Driving and flying. However it's their crawlers that intriged us and we will probably sell this brand in 2017, because their crawlers are true RC models and not toys, and offer a great product quality. In their huge variaty of crawlers we came across 6 and 8 WD trucks, with a superb detailed body.
The AMXrock range obviously includes 4x4 all-terrain trucks in "Jeep" or "Land Rover" style, in different sizes.
Thanks to it's fully aluminium alligation, the Wild Red V2 is increadibly robust. We also noticed very rigid shafts, in the back as well as at the front. The scale wheels also add to the Basher look.
De Jeep Rubicon bodies are very nicely detailed, bringing the crawler enthousiast some extra pleasure.
This chassis shows it's different articulations and possibilities, while being surounded by al types of accessories like de Beadlock wheels, with a very realistic look.
For ultimate crawling these caterpillar tracks who can replace a regular wheel to be able to remain in full control, even on the softest and slippiest underground.
AXIAL
Obviously Axial was also present in the 2017 edition of the fair, presenting their whole new range of Off-road and crawler vehicules on the Promodels/Hobbico stand.
This is the YETI JR Score Trophy, a 4WD truck at a 1/18th scale, available in RTR kit only with a Tactic TTX-200 remote, a 6 cell 1300mAh NiMH battery pack and an appropriate charger. Length: 330mm, width: 175mm.
With this RR10 Bomber Rock Racing is on the menu. This is a replica of Randy Slawson's car, equipped with a specific transfer case who's able to let in more power. The BFGOODRICH BAJA T/A KR2 tyres are also part of the stock set-up, just as the aluminium schocks, the tubular composit chassis and the different details. This standard set-up makes this Rock Racer a real "Must Have". This car comes with a Tactic TTX300 3-channel radio. Length: 570mm, width: 280mm, weight: 2830g.
Axial presents us one of the most famous Monster Trucks, with this RTR MAX-D Monster Jam truck. This is a 1/10th scale monster truck and has a length of 483mm and a width of 335mm. The truck is equipped with waterproof electronics and a 27T 540-size brushed motor. This beast uses long-range schocks and the picots from the body can be installed on demand.
Grave Digger is one of the most symbolic Monster Jam Trucks and Axial utilised their tubular chassis in this kit. Thanks to it's huge wheels, this beast can climb or crush any obstacle in it's way. This monster truck is a 1/10 scale replica of the real Grave Digger and is delivered in a RTR kit with a Tactic TTX300 radio. Length: 483mm, width: 335mm, weight: 3,22kg. 3S compatible, equipped with a 27T motor.
The Wraith Spawn is a 4WD 1/10th scale Rock Racer, presented in a very realistic and detailed way. Out of the box this truck is equipped with very rigid axles and tyres that fit the look of the car perfectly. The tyres are mounted on 3-piece Beadlock rims and will be grippy on the most difficult terrains. The 4 point suspension comes with configurable oil-filled schocks and manages to conquer the largest obstacles. Length: 490mm, width: 285mm, weight: 2470g.
Axial has mounted this Deadbolt body on the already proven SCX10 platform, what initially came from a AX10 chassis. Axial did their absolute best to make this body as realistic as possible, with the licensed Maxxis Trepador tyres, licensed Walker Evans rims and a realistic pilot figure. This machine is especially made for climbing obstacles like rocks, since it features rigid axles and a ladder-style chassis in C-shape. This car will be available in RTR kit with a Tactic TTX300 radio and a waterproof, 3S-LiPo compatible ESC. Length: 460mm, width: 225mm, weight: 2100g.
CARSON
This Stunt Warrior Truggy by Carson comes fitted with this Beetle body. This model is a RTR kit and comes with a 2.4GHz radio. This 1/10th scale Beetle weighs 1735g and has a total length of 420mm and a width of 290mm. This model will do 40km/h with the 2S 2200mAh LiPo battery it comes with out of the box. Because of the completion level this is an ideal car for starters.
This very original UNIMOG U300 Desert Rally model comes with a 6-channel stick radio in 2.4GHz. This model is fitted with functional head and tail lights and a sound system. The included battery pack is a 9,6V 750mAh NiMH pack and comes with an appropriate charger. Length: 445mm, width: 175mm and weight: 2480g. This model comes in a 2WD configuration.
DJI
As usual, the DJI stand is always very imposing, however, all new releases for this year were all previously anounced and are already available.
The Mavic Pro has become the reference if it comes to ultra portable drones and clearly inspired some concuring brands... You'll have to admit it's very tempting to buy one of these and put it in a backpack when you go out!
The DJI Inspire 1 and 2 are still available, fated to be used by professionals looking for the best possible image quality.
The Phantom 4 Pro is the ideal tool for the amateur photographer in the Phantom series, giving the pilot amazing footage with his 4K camera and his huge range of advanced feautures, such as the anti-collision system.
FUTABA
Now that Robbe is gone, We'll have to discover Futaba's new radio at the Ripmax stand. This new radio is especially designed for beginners and fits smaller budgets. This T6L is a 6 channel, non computerized radio, using the T-FHSS protocol. Because this radio comes equipped with a 2-position switch and a potentiometre the use of landing gear and flaps is possible. Delta mixing and V-tail mixing built-in.
HPI
HPI did something remarkable this year, since they just came with the same products as last year and replaced the "New 2016" stickers with "New 2017" stickers... Don't be confused when you have a "déja-vu" effect when looking at following pictures.
This gigantic Baja 5B "Desert" comes with a 26CC gas-powered engine and uses the modular "Dura Cage" technology.
The above car is the "new" BAJA 5R touring car, based on the BAJA concept. This BAJA 5R comes with the legendary 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 body and a 23CC 2-stroke gas engine powering the vintage 8-spoke rims and Tarmac Buster tyres.
The Jumpshot FUZION is an electric RTR Monster Truck, powered by a Fuzion brushless combo. This 2WD truck is especially designed for fun!
The Savage XL Flux gets it's power from a 6S battery pack and a 2200KV Flux motor. The car is equipped with waterproof electronics, 2-stage schocks and Double vertical plate frames. Length: 585mm, width: 427mm and 152mm of travel on the schocks! This one is a real beast!
Crawlers are very popular these days, and HPI definitely noticed this phenomen! Hardened axles, tubular chassis,... They are equipped with all you need like a real monster truck.
This is the new Toyota Venture FJ by HPI, a completely new platform for the true-to-life and crawler enthousiasts. His ladder chassis and it's realistic transmission makes it a very pleasant experience. The motor on this car is mounted in the front, and it's telescopic arms make sure the power gets to the 4 wheels, whom are mounted on hardened axles. This car also has "welded" differentials, just what you want and need on a crawler.
The Savage X SS 2.0 has a real technical character on a small scale model. This car is equipped with a F4.6 V2 engine, Dirt Claw tyres, a 3-step transmission and Big Bore schocks.
The 10T Flux powered, 2WD RTR E-Firestorm accomplishes speeds up to 120km/h with its MMH-4000KV brushless motor and its EMH-3S ESC. Because of this insane power, impressive jumps are not a problem for this car, and you get to drive practically anywhere because of the waterproof electronics. This model is compatible with 2S and 3S LiPo batteries as well as 6 or 7 cell NiMH packs. (Comes without battery or charger) Length: 325mm, width: 125mm.
HITEC/MULTIPLEX
As usual Multiplex and Hitec share a mutual stand, simply because they share the same boss. No true scoops this year on Hitec's side, just some new servos. In the Multiplex corner on the other hand, they went all in on their known and loved classics, they will release a new version of the Easy Glider for example. This 4th generation may look like all the previous ones, however the internals are different, this time the inner frame has been designed from scratch and has a better internal structure and assembly is different as well. It's also equipped with a Roxxy motor and ESC and has a new reinforcement to hold the wings, and has a new, easier way to pull apart the stabilisors, making transportation and storage easier. However if you're looking for a real novelty on Multiplex's side, they will be releasing an indoor version of their famous Extra, and on the bigger version one thing changed, as the RR Extra 330SC previously only came in a limited edition blue version (that sold out) and the RR plane now comes in the orange flame design that was previously only available in KIT version.
This is one of the new servos in the new "D"-range from Hitec. Because of this ultra-slim D145SW servo, with 4 fixation points gets you a very strong and reliable fixation in the wing. Its torque is 6kg.cm on a 7.4V tension. Weight: 24g.
This Hitec HSB-9381TH servo comes in this full metal case, has a torque of 34kg.cm at 7,4V and uses a brushless motor. Weight: 79g.
De D777MG, especially designed for surface vehicules is a low-profile servo, making it easy to mount as a steering servo. At 6V of tension it produces 6,5kg.cm of torque. This servo weighs 45g and is very quick with its 0.07s/60° rate at a 6V tension.
Hitec really put their bets on waterpoof servos, such as this D845WP. This servo is pretty massive and weighs not less then 227g! This monster servo offers you 50kg.cm of torque at 7.4V tension with a speed of 0.17s/60°.
This is the new servo programmer by Hitex, the HFP-30 and is a very practical device designed for use at the field and manages all newer generations of Hitec servos such as the HS-5XXX, HSB9XXX brushless and the new D ranges.
The Extra 330SC RR version were previously only available in the blue trim scheme, in lilmited editions. Now that all of these limited editions are sold out, Multiplex releases this red-flame scheme in the RR version as well, were previously this trim scheme was only available in the KIT version. The price had slightly dropped. Dit was and still is a very succesful model, and we're hoping it will remain this succesful for a long time.
A real "New" product this year is the Extra 330SC in this indoor/parkflyer version, only available in a kit version. This model is, just like its big brother, designed by Gernot Bruckmann and is created by Mirco Pecorarri. We also noticed the 2 models share the same trim schemes. For once Multiplex chose to use EPP foam instead of their own "Elapor foam". This model has a wingspan of 845mm and a flying weight of 175g, with a 2S 450mAh battery.
Multiplex also announced a new range of spray paints, especially designed for Elapor foam, but will also work on EPP, EPO, Depron, etc. and will be replacing the old range. This new range of products have some major improvements over the old generation, such as more content (400ml cans), built-in primer, 10 different colors, a semi-matt finish and a quicker curing paint formula.
This year Multiplex will also release new M-Link telemetry sensors, just like the "Air" sensor, equipped with a real Pitot-tube, mesuring speed and height and has a on-board vario metre. This sensor will be the favourite for a lot of soaring plane pilots. When we're looking at the new G-Sensor we notice that this is an acceleration metre mesuring the actual G-Force on 2 axises (vertically and horizontally). The sensor has a range going from -16G to +16G.
The Master Edition Profi TX (already available in the MCM store) gets a really nice carbon-like front, wich makes it less vulnerable for fingerprints then the standard Profi TX radio. This Profi TX is a 16-channel radio, equipped with the latest programming software and the latest, most advanced programming feautures yet. This radio has a 200-model memory and the Master Edition comes with a RX-16-DR Pro M-Link receiver, equipped with the WINGSTABI stabilisation technology.
Multiplex will release different motorisation combo's, based on the Roxxy motors and ESC's. On this picture you can see the new power set for the new Extra 330SC Indoor.
The new Multiplex PowerPeak C8 works with a 12V DC or a AC 220V input and is able to charge Lithium battery packs up to 8S (LiHV as well) and NiMH and NiCD batteries up to 24S, and PB batteries up to 24V. This charger can handle 10A in charge and has 110W of power.
The Power Peak E7 has 200W of power to charge 1 to 7S Lithium batteries, 1 to 18S Nickel batteries and PB batteries up to 24V. This charger is compatible with a 12V DC power source or the normal 220V power socket.
Then there's the UNI7, this is the type of charger you would use to charge your TX and RX battery packs. This charge is able to charge LiPo or LiFe batteries up to 4S at a charge rate of 0,5A or 1A, Nickel batteries up to 8S at a charge rate of 0,12V, 0,25A or 1A and 2V, 6V or 12V PB batteries at a charge rate of 0,5A.
NINCO
It's in the Slot Racing department that we find the Ninco stand, their tracks are especially designed for the youngest and are very simple and robust.
Some of the new tracks are already available, and the peculiar side of these is the 1/43th scale cars, this scale is also used in non-motorised toy cars. Children are already used to the size, since their regular toys are at the same scale.
Multiple body prototypes will soon be available, these unpainted versions prove us this. In this future line-up of bodies there will also be a licensed Renault body.
This track shows us the entire accessories line-up.
The most outstanding novelty on Ninco's stand are these "waves" (making your car move up and down constantly) and then you have the tighter corners to make your experience more spicy.

Schumacher Re-releases the legendary CAT XLS this year, who, since it's introduction in 1986, revolutionised the all-terain racing! This buggy has won a lot of races around the world, England, Europe, Japan, Australia and America. The 2017 model is an exact replica of Masimi Hirosaka's XLS, with a modified longer wheelbase, used in 1987. On the picture you can see the original 1987 version on the left and the 2017 replica on the right.
On this image you'll see the new Mi6 EVO chassis, built to support "Touring"-class bodies. This chassis has many improvements over the last version, such as a lower CG and a transmission with zero play.
You're an indoor racing pilot? Good news then, because Schumacher has you covered with this new ATOM CC, wich is a distant relative of the SupaStox ATOM, built on a carbon fibre chassis, giving you the oportunity to place your batteries where you want.
This is the Cougar KC, especially designed for races on carpet or Astro. This car feautures 4 mounting options for the motor and a fair few different mounting options for the batteries. Thanks to all the possible adjustments it's possible to set-up this car for very sharp-turn tracks as well as fast tracks.
There's another Cougar model besides the KC, it's the KD. This one is build for dusty, rough terrains with less grip. The chassis can easily be modified to race on dusty tracks as well as smooth surfaces, as long as there's not to much grip.
T2M
This 2017 edition of the Nuremberg toy fair was the perfect time for T2M to celebrate their 50th anniversary. It was in 1967 that the company was founded. It looks like it's going well at T2M, since they announced a huge lot of new products, especially in the RC car category.
