More info
The F/A-18E/F ‘Super Hornet’ fighter is in fact an enlarged and improved model of the F/A-18C/D ‘Hornet’. The first design concept came from the ‘Bumblebee’ 2000 project proposed by MacDonald Douglas in the early 1980s. The Bumblebee 2000 concept was to use an improved version of the F/A-18C/D with a larger wing area, a longer fuselage capable of carrying more fuel and engines with greater thrust.
The fuselage of the F/A-18E/F is lengthened by 860 mm, and the increased space is used to accommodate improved avionics systems and carry more fuel. However, the F/A-18E/F ‘Super Hornet’ has a structure that is 42% stronger than the F/A-18C/D ‘Hornet’ due to its optimised design. It uses GE's F414 engine, which is developed from the F404 used by the F/A-18C/D Hornet, with a 35% increase in thrust. This allows the Super Hornet to carry more unspent fuel and weapons to the carrier for landing once the combat mission is complete. This capability is known in the industry as ‘carry-back’.
The F/A-18E/F ‘Super Hornet’ fighter first flew in 1995. It went into series production in September 1997. The F/A-18E/F ‘Super Hornet’ entered service with the US Navy in 1999 and has completely replaced the F-14 ‘Tomcat’ fighter aircraft since 2006.
