The Su-27 Flanker is a single-seat, twin-engine Mach-2 class fighter originally produced by the Soviet Union and designed by the Sukhoi design bureau. It was intended to be a direct competitor to the large American three-generation fighters, with a range of 3,530 kilometres, heavy weapons, sophisticated avionics and great manoeuvrability. The Su-27 most often carries out air superiority missions, but is capable of almost all combat operations. Complementing the smaller MiG-29, the Su-27's closest American counterpart is the F-15 Eagle.
